Visit to Bernay in 2010

Over 40 members visited Bernay, from Thursday 23 September to Sunday 26 September. We all had an excellent visit and enjoyed the 25th anniversary programme and events. Click here for pictures from the visit.

The highlight of the weekend was a visit to Paris with a guided tour of the Senate, organised by the Mayor of Bernay, Senator Maurey, followed during the afternoon by a river trip on a 'bateau-mouche'. Click here for a fuller report (PDF, 31KBytes.

During the same weekend there was a cycling event in which eight riders from Haslemere competed against several clubs from a wide area of Normandy. See the report above for more details.

Petersfield Twinning Quiz

On Thursday, Nov. 11th 2010, six of our members responded to the invitation from our friends in Petersfield Twinning Association to take part in their quiz night, held in a capacious and comfortable private room at the Half Moon in Sheet. Apart from being a thoroughly enjoyable occasion, with an excellent ploughman's supper, it brought together representatives of several other twinning associations, in Bordon, Horndean, Waterlooville and Portsmouth. Our team, dubbed the 'Haslemere Hopefuls', managed to come second in the competition, as well as walking away with a disproportionate number of raffle prizes! Quiz team

Social evening with quiz and fish and chip supper

On Saturday evening, November 13th 2010, upwards of eighty people took part in a quiz evening held in Our Lady of Lourdes church hall. Our thanks are due to Michael Bawtree for devising most of the questions and keeping the contest moving thanks to his skilful use of IT, and to committee members and others who helped in various ways. In the middle of the evening we enjoyed a delicious fish and chip supper. The raffle was very successful, and we are grateful to Marley Flowers and others for donating prizes. We were particularly pleased that the evening attracted a large number of non-members, thereby we hope serving to publicise Haslemere Twinning to a wider audience.

Haslewey pictures

Over the years, the Association has been given a number of gifts by both our twin towns. Some of these have hung on the walls of the Town Hall but the drawback was that few people had a chance to see them. Your committee have been seeking better solutions and have given to the Museum a rather splendid plate from Bernay and an impressive shield from Horb but the Museum could not undertake to display them all the time. We were therefore delighted with an offer from the Haslewey Community Centre to feature a permanent display of four of our pictures of Horb and Bernay. A local firm, Sheen Botanical Labels, generously created attractive labels which let people know what each picture is. You will find them all on the wall to the right as you approach the meeting/computer room. You can find photos of the pictures on the Horb historical gallery page and the Bernay historical gallery page.

Bastille celebration 2010

We celebrated Bastille Day in a novel manner this year by hiring Fernhurst Cricket Pavilion on the evening of Thursday, July 15th. The weather had been very unpromising during the afternoon, but miraculously brightened up in time for us to play croquet on the recreation ground, under the guidance of Wendy Bennett who had brought along some of her fellow croquet experts to teach us how to play. We then retired to the pavilion for a delicious buffet supper, after which members seemed very happy to stay and play indoor games or just enjoy the convivial atmosphere and get to know each other better.

There are some pictures on the gallery page.

Cloppenburg report

From June 9th - 13th, 2010, Bernay celebrated the 20th anniversary of their German twinning by a visit to Cloppenburg. This was a sort of 're-match' for the celebrations that took place last year in Bernay, and which were attended by a small number of representatives from Haslemere. The original twinning charter between Bernay and Cloppenburg was signed in Bernay in 1989, and in Cloppenburg in 1990. This year, too, Haslemere was invited to send a small number of Association members to take part in the events. Four members of the committee, and two of their wives, made the journey to Cloppenburg, to join the sixty or so participants from Bernay, who of course included many well-known friends. Three of us went by train, two in their own car, and one joined the French on the fourteen-hour coach journey from Bernay.

Visit to us by our German friends in the weekend of 24/25 April 2010

On Saturday our German visitors had a full day in Brighton, including a visit to the Pavilion.
The Twinning Dinner was held at the Georgian Hotel.
